GPS is negotiating for every breathe we take:

  • Of all the environmental parameters, Air Quality is the easiest measurable target for Sustainable Cities where over 5 billion people, 60% of world population, will be living by 2030. However it was the only environment target that was not explicit in the draft goals at start of the negotiations.
  • Poor air quality increases respiratory diseases among children and elderly, days of work lost by parents, particularly mothers, increased public/private health-care costs, even reductions in agricultural production.

Results of international negotiations on air-quality 2014-2016:

  • Through a year-long series of UN-focused advocacy, GPS and associates highlighted the gap on air-quality. After concerted advocacy the word “air-quality” was finally added to sub-goal 11.6, “air” was added to water and soil in reducing chemical contamination in sub-goal 12.4 ; air pollution was recognized as major health threat in sub-goal 3.9. Indicators including PM 2.5 and PM 10 were accepted in 11.6.2 and ambient air pollution in 3.9.1.
